Mortgage rates in the US have risen sharply for the second consecutive week, with the 30-year fixed rate reaching 6.52%, the highest since August, and the 15-year rate climbing to 5.94%. These increases have contributed to steep declines in both home-purchase activity and refinancing, with a 7.2% drop in purchases and a 26% drop in refinancing. The rising rates are tied to higher Treasury yields due to strong job growth and persistent inflation, dashing hopes for a swift recovery in the housing market.
